A- Scope of Rehabilitation Work:
The Karuma Bridge rehabilitation involves four main tasks:
1- Removing the old concrete deck (surface).
2- Replacing the six worn-out bearings (which function like shock absorbers).
3- Reinforcing the bridge's abutments (support structures).
4- Laying a new concrete surface (installing a new deck).
B- Condition of the Bridge:
The girders (steel beams) of the bridge are in excellent condition and do not need replacement.
C- Delays in Procurement:
The major delay in the project has been due to issues with sourcing the original bearings, which are outdated. The bearings needed to be refabricated, and they are expected to arrive by mid-October.
D- Work Progress:
While waiting for the bearings, work continues on removing the deck and reinforcing the bridge abutments to prepare for the next phases of the project.
E- Community Concerns:
Concerns had been raised by some community members regarding the authenticity and accountability of the rehabilitation efforts.
However, the project is progressing with clear technical explanations provided by UNRA engineers. Source: Hon Mp Tony Awany
