Copyright is a crucial aspect of the music industry, protecting creators' rights and intellectual property. In Uganda, music copyright is governed by the Uganda Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act (2006).

What is Copyright?

Copyright is the exclusive right granted to creators to reproduce, distribute, and display their work, including music compositions and sound recordings.

1. Composition Copyright

- Protects musical composition (lyrics and melody)
- Owner: Composer/Songwriter

2. Sound Recording Copyright

- Protects specific recording of a song
- Owner: Record Label/Artist

3. Performance Rights

- Protects live performances (concerts, shows)
- Owner: Performer (Artist/Band)

5. Mechanical Rights

- Protects reproduction of musical works (CDs, downloads)
- Owner: Composer/Songwriter, Publisher

6. Synchronization Rights

- Protects use of music in visual media (films, TV, ads)
- Owner: Composer/Songwriter, Publisher

7. Distribution Rights

- Protects distribution of musical works (physical, digital)
- Owner: Record Label/Distributor

8. Publishing Rights

- Protects publication of musical works (sheet music, lyrics)
- Owner: Publisher

In Uganda, these music are managed by:

- Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB)
- Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS)
